Your earnings as a travel nurse depend on several factors, such as your specialty, location, and chosen benefits. You may also qualify for housing, meal, and incidental stipends to cover actual expenses during your assignment. Your recruiter will provide the details.

Where to start

As a staff nurse, you already meet many of the requirements to become a travel nurse. RN degree

You must have a Registered Nurse (RN) degree, with at least an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN).

NCLEX-RN exam

After completing a nursing program, you must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN).

State license

Work experience

To become a travel nurse, you need at least one year of experience in your specialty, ideally in a hospital setting. You’ll also typically need to provide two professional references. Your recruiter will inform you of any additional experience requirements for your desired assignment.

Compliance requirements

After securing an assignment, your credentialing specialist will guide you through the necessary nursing compliance requirements.

Medical and health requirements

Have your health records ready for upload. Since each facility has specific requirements, your credentialing specialist will arrange any necessary medical services not covered by your records, including blood work, vaccinations, TB testing, and a physical exam.

Drug screen and background check

You'll need to complete a drug test and background check before your first assignment. Your credentialing specialist will assist in scheduling any required appointments!

State license

We can help fast-track licensing in all 50 states. If you live in a state eligible for nursing compact licensure, we’ll assist in converting your license so you can practice in all compact states. We also support nurse licensure renewals—our team will notify you if your license is expiring and guide you through the renewal process. Plus, Aya covers your license costs—some upfront and others through reimbursement!

Certifications

Depending on your specialty, additional certifications may be required. We’ll help identify what you need and assist in finding local classes to complete them. Ask your credentialing specialist which certifications are reimbursable. Plus, don’t forget—Aya offers free access to CEUs!
